As our big announcement stated, Imagine Burundi ended its new broadcasts in July 2013. But keep checking back in our Archive - we will be posting new clips of our past episodes there.

And don't forget to check out our colleague's new project, The Burundian Way, a weekly radio program at the same hour on the same channel - 3 p.m. every Wednesday and Saturday on 99.4 FM CCIB.

Archive Coming Soon!

Posted by imagineburundi on August 31, 2011

August 31, 2011

The live show on Saturday went pretty well. We’re still having some technical problems though, which Jeff will one day learn to accept. Maybe.

Our Archive is finally coming along. The first clips should go up this Sunday, the 4th. After that, we will post clips from a “new” back episode each Sunday. As we started broadcasting in November 2010, these updates could go on for a while.

Jeff just attended a ‘cupping’ session at the Prestige Cup competition for Burundian coffees. We’ll get some photos up soon of that event.

And this weekend, Jeff will travel to Rwanda to do some reporting there.

August 27 Live Show

Posted by imagineburundi on August 24, 2011

August 24, 2011

For our live show this Saturday the 27th, we will be previewing the Prestige Cup competition, which is a precursor to the Cup of Excellence. The competition will offer coffee buyers from all over the world a chance to grade and promote Burundian coffee. This event will be a good gauge of development in Burundi’s coffee industry and possibly increase the industry’s profile abroad. We hope to speak to several individuals involved with the competition.

Hey, we also just received an email from our site host that our site is entirely powered by wind power! Excellent. Wind, from Fat Cow.

And, just a note, our email address is currently down until the end of the month.

And Then We Were Three…

Next Live Show: August 27, 2011

August 14, 2011

Seth is away in the U.S. for the next month, but the big news this week? Ciza is away for….forever. We (including Ciza, I think) found out that his cousin in Nairobi had recently secured a university spot for him in Guangzhou, China. So he left. Yesterday.

And even though this change occurred so suddenly and we have had so little time to work with Ciza, he has helped immensely with our outreach efforts. We will be reaping the benefits of his efforts for a long time to come. We warmly thank Ciza for his passion, his ideas and above all, his reliability, because that’s just not a very abundant quality here in Burundi. Ciza was generous enough to sit down with me for a chat before his departure and so we will be dedicating next week’s show to his thoughts about his imminent arrival in China where he could spend the next four years studying.

Good luck, Ciza!

Our First Month Since Re-Launch

Posted by imagineburundi on August 7, 2011

We have an office! We are now housed down the hall from the CCIB studio. Ok, the lights don’t work and because we’re in the basement, the wireless doesn’t reach us. And it smells like paint fumes right now, but it’s so nice to have a home.

Our office.

On the show front, we tried some ambitious field reporting from the ‘Love Burundi Festival’ for our live show yesterday but were thwarted by a tepid cellphone signal.

This week we have a full schedule of outreach activities all over the city. Look out, Kamenge!

Imagine Burundi visited the Cibitoke English Club on July 23:

Chris and Seth.

Jeff speaking to the club

Chris making a move in Charades. The answer was ‘Burundi’.

The Team. That can't look in the same direction. And Chris forgot his t-shirt.

This coming Saturday’s show will be a live broadcast in Bujumbura. We’ll probably spend some time talking about the ‘Love Burundi Festival’, which, it turns out, is funded and organized by faith-based organization.

And this week’s show will continue the Coffee Series as we speak with Sarah Kluth, Green Coffee Manager/Buyer for Intelligentsia Coffee.

July 17, 2011

Just by way of update, the last live show on July 16 went pretty well – we had the whole team there: Chris, Ciza, Jeff and Seth. We also had several callers, gave away some t-shirts and carried on a solid discussion about Jeff’s recent trip to Chicago, Grinnell College and gourmet coffee. There was also an intriguing moment when Ciza wondered if Chris is really Burundian because of his British accent. All in all, an informative hour, and we only had one mic gaffe this time. Things are looking up.

On the less up-side, it’s taking longer to revamp the website and add more content as we migrate over to a different content management system. Internet access in Burundi will be a long-term issue but we’re optimistic we can add some clips to the archive in the next couple weeks.

WBEZ’s Worldview with Jerome McDonnell featured Imagine Burundi on its July 6 broadcast.

Jeff spoke with Jerome about Imagine Burundi, and Worldview was very generous to repost one of our pieces: Seth’s incredible journey from Kigali back to Bujumbura.

July 4, 2011

Imagine Burundi will be re-launching with new episodes and new ideas on July 16 with a Live Show featuring the whole crew. We’ll be looking ahead to upcoming segments and activities and maybe our second-ever caller!

In this space, we will also announce future live shows, events and workshops. We broadcast one live show for every two recorded shows.

We are also going to overhaul the design of this site in the near future and add a lot more content. Check back once in a while and we’ll try to surprise you each time.

Imagine Burundi is selected as one of two winners for Grinnell College’s Wall Alumni Service Award!

This is an amazing honor, and we are so thrilled that this little project is taking on new momentum. With the grant from the award, we hope to expand the programming beyond a weekly broadcast. Already, we’re thinking of different ways to interact with our listeners, through talks, workshops, new shows, and other community activities. We also plan to use the funds to ensure Imagine Burundi will continue broadcasting far into the future.

Congratulations also to the other winner, Leah Bry! Learn more about Leah’s organization at and follow her work at
